This is a brilliant use of crowd source. It's not only used by Google, but hundreds of academic sites so that researchers and students can quickly find the information they need. Also it labels them backwards. The clear word is the one used to say that you are human. The twisted one is the one that scanners can't read and it takes a human eye to translate them. To date hundreds of years worth of translating has been done using captcha. The twisted words are from old documents where the printing has been skewed by time and the printing it was in. I usually agree with Anonymous's ideas, but this one is wrong.
