A bird in the bush...

There is no chance of photographing one, as these guys hide in the deepest thickets whilst they advertise their presence incredibly loudly. You'd do well to even see one, let alone photograph one. The males are famed for singing at night to attract a mate, but in reality they hold forth during the day too. With all that singing, it is amazing that they don't suffer a sore throat more often, and by gum they sing.

There really was one singing in this bush when R took the photo at Whisby nature reserve. The best time to hear them is in the beginning of May, the show is pretty well over by now. The song itself is really quite remarkable, and very loud. These birds are only just a little bit larger than our Robins; perhaps they invented loud hailers somehow, because it does not seem possible that something so small can make so much noise otherwise.
