"Giving your music away for free makes you more easily accessible to others looking for entertainment, and you have more of a chance of "going viral", meaning fans will tell their friends about you, then those people will tell their friends about you, so on and so forth. Your brand could spread more rapidly. This technique could rival the traditional marketing methods the major labels use to promote their bands, because you are giving your music away to the masses while the labels still insist on selling. These labels are risking a lot, considering they are spending so much money on advertising, unsure whether the music will sell or not. You do not need to put yourself in a similar situation.
Also, giving music away for free builds trust. You are giving your listeners a chance to decide whether they like you or not, risk free, and perhaps they would be willing to support you in the future, like buying a t-shirt, an album, etc. Trust is very important. People want to know they can safely expect quality, they don't want to be disappointed, and they want to build a sort of relationship with you and/or your music. Give that to them."
