Jazz pianist Pia Beck dies at age 84

Dutch jazz virtuoso Pia Beck has died of a hear attack at her home in Torremolinos, Spain. RIP. She was self-taught, couldn't read sheet music and just, well, jammed it: boogie-woogie, jazz, rock 'n roll, blues, you name it.

    ON HORSEBACK

    THE WORLD OF PHILIPS WOUWERMAN

In his own day, Philips Wouwerman was highly successful and extremely productive. His paintings were avidly sought after by well-to-do burghers. No less than 600 paintings by this artist have come down to us. However, nowadays, is not a household name.

Wouwerman was extremely fond of horses. They recur time and again in his scenes of battlefields, army camps, hunting pieces, riding schools and stables.

With approximately 35 of Wouwerman’s best works, this exhibition presents a survey of his oeuvre. Attention is devoted not only to paintings in which horses are central, but also his genre pieces, religious scenes and Italianate landscapes.

    Alfred Stevens

    18 September 2009 - 24 January 2010

Belgian artist Alfred Stevens (1823-1906) was one of the most well-known artists in Paris in the second half of the 19th century. He caused a furore with his paintings of elegant, intriguing and distant women. The artist captured the contemporary worldly woman convincingly and deftly, paying close attention to the gorgeous textures of the clothing and luxuriously appointed interiors. This first retrospective in thirty years of Alfred Stevens features 64 paintings and is being organised in cooperation with the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels, where it was on display until 23 August 2009.

World-famous Dmanisi skull comes to Leiden

The Dmanisi skull is the oldest example of a hominin skull to be found outside Africa. It therefore plays a crucial role in the debate on the migrations of our ancestors. The skull will be flown into Schiphol airport on Friday 27 November to be exhibited in Naturalis. The exhibition will open with a symposium led by Spinoza prize winner Wil Roebroeks.

The skill will be transported under strict security from Tblisi, Georgia, to the Netherlands on Friday 27 November to be exhibited in the auditorium of Naturalis in Leiden. This will be the first time that the skull has left its safe in the National Historic Museum of Tblisi to be put on public display. At 1.8 million years old, it is the oldest example of a hominin skull to be found outside Africa. The find was made in 1983 in the medieval city of Dmanisi, in Georgia.

The Dmanisi skull will be exhibited from 28 November to 28 February in the Naturalis Museum. The exibition will open with a symposium on the finds in Dmanisi and the evolution of man. The symposium is being organised by archaeologist Wil Roebroeks, winner of the Spinoza prize in 2007, as part of the Spinoza project.

Together with his colleague Robin Dennell from Sheffield, Roebroeks questioned the theory that hominins were found up to 1.8 million years ago only in Africa. The first hominins were thought to have migrated from Africa to colonise Asia. According to the assumptions held until recently, early hominins began to spread from 1.8 million years ago from Africa to Asia. Roebroeks and Dennell believe that these hominins left Africa much earlier and continued an independent branch of development in Asia. Africa was then populated 1.8 million years ago by these hominins from Asia.
