"We have to think of the Buddha to be more like an explorer of the inner man who finds his other shore which is beyond birth and death. After finding this other shore, out of compassion, the Buddha, we could say, also leaves to posterity a lot of really great maps. This means, of course, that we too have to become spiritual navigators. We will have to weather many storms in our own small vessel--but at least the Buddha has given us all that we need to cross this vast ocean of suffering if we avail ourselves to his discourses and really ponder them night and day."

Dalai Lama: ...it is quite difficult to have an experience of Dzogchen, but once you do have that experience, it can be extremely beneficial in dealing with your day to day life, your job, and your career. This is because that kind of experience will give you the ability to prevent yourself from being overwhelmed by circumstances, good or bad. You will not fall into extreme states of mind: you will not get over-excited or depressed. Your attitude toward circumstances and events will be as if you were someone observing the mind, without being drawn away by circumstances."

Are you familiar with the name Piomingo? Sadly, hardly anyone is. Piomingo was a Chickasaw leader who befriended the first settlers in middle Tennessee and worked to insure their safety holding his own against more hostile tribes, like the Creek

"At the request of the Chickasaw chiefs, Washington gave Piomingo a written document, setting forth the boundaries of the Chickasaw territory. These coincided exactly with those expressed by Piomingo at the conference in Nashville in 1792. The document stated that the Chickasaw territory was under the protection of the United States and included a warning to its citizens.

They were forbidden to trespass on, injure, or molest Chickasaw persons, lands, hunting grounds, or other rights or property. They were also forbidden to purchase or treat (trade) with the Chickasaws for the title or occupation of any lands held or claimed by them. Washington also said he would "call upon all appropriate citizens to aid and assist in the prosecution and punishment, according to law, of all persons who shall be found offending in the premises."

Thomas Traherne (1636-1674) on the subtle dynamics of meeting a spiritual teacher.

"But there are a sort of Saints meet to be your companions, in another manner, but that they be concealed. You must therefore make yourself exceeding virtuous that by the very splendour of your fame you may find them out. While the wicked are like heaps of rubbish, these few jewels lie buried in the ruins of mankind: and must diligently be digged for. You may know them by their lustre, and by the very desire and esteem they have of you when you are virtuous. For as it is the glory of the sun that darkness cannot approach it, because it is always encompassed with its own beams; so it is the privilege of Holy Souls, that they are always secure in their own light, which driveth away devils and evil men: and is accessible by none, but lovers of virtue. Beginners and desirers will give you the opportunity of infusing yourself and your principles into them. Practicers and growers will mingle souls and be delightful companions. The sublime and perfect, in the lustre of their spirit, will show you the Image of Almighty God and the joys of Heaven. They will allure, protect, encourage, comfort, teach, honour and delight you. But you must be very good, for that is the way to find them. And very patient to endure some time, and very diligent to observe where they are."

"How far we get is a matter of training ourselves. I have been going to bed around 10 and getting up at 530 for over a month now. I am at my desk by 545 after i get dressed, make tea, light a candle and incense, and offer my work on behalf of all beings. then i open the blank page.

i do not let myself get up until i reach 2,000 words which on my worst day so far took me close to 5 hours.

i don't know what has shifted for me. I am not backing down. I am not giving up when the material gets so hard to write that i am drumming on my desk, taking 5 minutes to wash the window behind me, saying things out loud, going over to the bookshelf and making sure every book is pulled neat right up to the edge, i am then right back in the chair word by word moving forward.

when it's difficult, the mountain climber goes slowly, takes breaks, but keeps putting one foot in front of the other. often his life depends on keeping moving, sticking with it."
