One Step Ahead
"I loved that tune, your voice sounds like George Harrison to me..." " Your songs come across like Crowded House meet the Beach Boys...but with more rock guitar." "That first tune on your last album got me singing in the shower and dancing in the living room...and I like those songs that make me sway."
That sway, doesn't it bring the song deep into your mind and down into your loins?
As a song writer I like all those kind words. As a listener and a musician I formed my early musical tastes in the 60's and 70's. The Beatles, Beach Boys, The Byrds, Buffaloe Springfield and so many others were all available right there on the Radio Dial. (Many times I also liked the little bands that were one hit wonders:and Tom Hanks covered that music so well in his movie "That Thing You Do".)
The music that I liked best had melodies you could sing along with, guitar riffs that caught your ears, a beat that was strong and up-tempo,and vocal harmonies that gave the song wings. (And I still like those things.) But when I write songs now I also try to bring in meaningful lyrics.
I call my writing Adult Rock, because it deals with things adults have experienced. The songs tell stories and express emotions that adults have seen and felt; passion, love and loss. And these stories and emotions are carried by music that adults can relate to: an energetic and melodic rock and roll reminiscent of 60's and 70's music.
For those keen on a few details; the music was written and recorded at home by yours truly. A variety of guitars were used: Strat, Tele, Les Paul, 12-string electric,Baritone, Long Horn Bass 6 and several other basses were used for sonic variety. I was blessed to have an old friend, Steve Sadler, play lapsteel slide guitar on 5 out of 12 tunes. (Steve Sadler adds a great musical quality to any song.)
Listen to the CDBaby samples and you can make up your own mind what to call this music. (They should give you about the first 2 minutes of each tune.) My only request is that you play the music loud enough to know that it is rock and roll. Feel free to get in touch with me about music at steveblomerth@mindspring.com
I hope this CD will give you some music that you can't get elsewhere. And I hope it will give you something old and something new, but most importantly a bit of melody, harmony and rhythm to energize your day.
(And something you can sing along with in your car, or carry with you on your iPod.)
