Agreed. It is unusual for young people to go digging through old census records. But you know what? I did with my Gram when I was a girl. I went with her to the Caroline Street Genealogical Research Library in Houston. It ranks #3 in the nation. It is city owned and operated and is used by folks whose ancestors came from and lived in the South. Because of the nature of the study, records of baptism, marriage and burial were kept by churches. But most of the time they were Episcopalian, Catholic, Methodist and Baptist in the South--lots and lots and lots of Baptists. I don't recall ever encountering records for LDS congregations. That said, if you have Dixie roots and wonder about your kith and kin, think about paying the research center a visit then next time you find yourself in the Bayou City.
