Spywareblaster 4.0 released. My pick with reservations This is wildly popular because users think it uses no resource.
But in actuality, all it does is to make use of existing black list functions in browsers and windows. The main function involves setting a "kill-bit" to stop known bad Activex controls.
Other functions added later were to important known dangerous sites into Internet explorer's restricted zones as well as to firefox's cookie lists.
While you do not need spywareblaster to be running to be protected, the cost of this protection is not zero. For example, you are importing thousands of registry entries
which will bulk up the registry store and the memory needed for it.
I personally think this software is overrated, and helps very little once you have all the basics (tight browser settings, patched system). But I am in the minority.
