In 1983 Joe Strummer and Paul Simonon fired Mick Jones from the band. They formed a new lineup of the Clash what has now become regarded by fans as The Clash MK II.
The following year the clash II released the album 'Cut the Crap'. The album was created during a real period of turmoil for the band, which resulted in the manager seizing creative control. This resulted in a bizzare production which involved crazy synths and an out of control drum machine.
The album was unfortunately a real let down. The second lineup of the Clash had some fantastic songs, which is demonstrated by the number of live recordings that exist.
One of the stand out songs from this period was Strummer's haunting 'This is England'. In the same way as the rest of the album, the song suffers from a terrible production.
However, 26 years later, someone on youtube has given the song a new lease of life by remixing the track and adding real drums, more guitar and bass.
The person has done an incredible job and sadly shows how fantastic the Cut the Crap album could have been. This is England remains one of my favourite songs of all time and this version only reinforces that.
