Encyclopedia of Life

From the page:
"THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF LIFE"
Encyclopedia of Life is an ecosystem of websites that makes all key information about life on Earth accessible to anyone, anywhere in the world. Our goal is to create a constantly evolving encyclopedia that lives on the Internet, with contributions from scientists and amateurs alike. To transform the science of biology, and inspire a new generation of scientists, by aggregating all known data about every living species. And ultimately, to increase our collective understanding of life on Earth, and safeguard the richest possible spectrum of biodiversity. The content of Encyclopedia of Life, of course, has been a work in progress across the planet for centuries, reflected in the hard work of dedicated scientists and naturalists, both past and present. Planning efforts have already begun, and we have started to develop work plans, identify partners, and secure additional funding. Scanning and digitization of the biodiversity literature is now underway in London, Boston, and Washington DC. Development of Encyclopedia web pages will begin later this year. It is too soon to predict how long it will take to fully document, catalog, and list all 1.8 million species on the Encyclopedia of Life site. We intend to make key components of the Encyclopedia available to the general public starting some time in 2008. As a ballpark estimate, we believe that we can produce the full encyclopedia in about 10 years."

WoRMS - World Register of Marine Species
Reviewed • 4 reviews • marine biology, research, resource • marinespecies.org
From Site:
World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS)
In the light of the 300th birthday of Linnaeus, we aimed to reach 100,000 valid species names by the end of 2007. We reached the target!
We now hope to have 200,000 valid species by the end of 2008, still 77,441 to go
With WoRMS we aim to provide an authoritative list of names of all marine species globally, ever published.
WoRMS is a contribution to Species2000 and the Catalogue of Life, and will serve as the taxonomic backbone of OBIS.
WoRMS has been accepted as one of the four GBIF campaigns.
Towards a World Register of Marine Species
The aim of a World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) is to provide an authoritative and comprehensive list of names of marine organisms, including information on synonymy. While highest priority goes to valid names, other names in use are included so that this register can serve as a guide to interpret taxonomic literature.
