On a shoe-string budget and with tape recorder in hand, I emerged from cancer treatment and hit the road seeking other twenty and thirty-something survivors who might make my freakish life feel a bit more normal. From a cha-cha studio in suburban New Jersey to the barren hills of a Native American reservation in the Pacific Northwest, and beyond, twenty-five perfect strangers confessed to me what they would not divulge to their doctors, therapists, friends, family, or in support groups. I learned from these young adult cancer patients how to date, write a resume, scrounge for health insurance, manage parenting and ultimately how to find deep friendship in the most unlikely places.
