" in 2010, our life started to change once again and we felt a huge desire and in fact need to relocate to somewhere with more nature, it felt like our life had been on pause while we worked so hard keeping everything together and we found ourselves out of step with where we wanted to be. We asked in our website and in our emails for help at that time, and many of you did generously donate at that time, for which we are very grateful.
However, once we'd made the move, not only did we have the reality of higher living costs, but we had a site that was still growing and needed more time to devote to it. We've been wanting to launch a new version of the site for many months now, but we kept having to interrupt it so we could work on something that would generate some income for us. To try and alleviate this, we finally decided to put advertising on the site, starting gently at first, before putting it on every page on the site. We tried both Google Adsense (where we have no ability to filter the adverts) and our own advertising program.
Since then, the Google Adsense, and our own advertising program has helped us keep the site up and running, and also gave us renewed hope, and allowed us to once again push forward with the new, long awaited (for us at least) version of the site. Google Adsense has been wonderful in the sense that it doesn't take any effort, so we could focus on actually working on the site, but it does mean we have to allow adverts on that we don't feel are relevant, and some we actually object to. Our own advertising program, we liked because it allowed readers and authors to advertise on the site, and we could be sure the adverts were appropriate.
So, in an attempt to create the best of both worlds, we have recently launched Spiritual Ads, a self service advertising system that makes advertising on Spirit Library, and in time other spiritual sites, more accessible to businesses and practitioners whatever their budget. It also allows us to ensure the quality and relevancy of the adverts. That was the plan at least, but so far the response to it has been pretty lukewarm. We contacted many people that had previously expressed an interest in advertising with us, but only a few signed up despite offering a generous signup bonus to them." -Spirit Library Announcement 6/27/2011
