My name is Jennifer Schmitt, and I'm a professional calligrapher and a freelance writer. I work out of my home studio in the Phoenix metro area to meet the calligraphy and design needs of my clients. Beautiful snapshot of a morning. From the page: I wake a few minutes later, try to kiss her, but she objects, insists I take the kiss back, which just means I get to kiss her again. She goes back to contentedly sucking her thumb and leaning up against me. I keep my face in her hair, feel the weight and warmth of her against me. I remember how people keep telling me it will be over in an instant, and I have this feeling that I'll wake up tomorrow and she'll be thirty and I'll have missed the twenty-eight years in the middle.

From the page: You see, that teasing? That came because those kids - in first grade - are so locked into gender norms that they think it is OK to mock those who break with them. They simply cannot see a space to do anything that is gender-different. My kid didn't even do anything all that radical - he just brought in a toy. But, his peers were so used to everyone conforming to gender norms that they couldn't wrap their heads around it except to tease him for it.
