    Thorn at Solstice

Winter arrived this morning, and the day is shortest today. When I walked the rose garden yesterday, I saw the roses gone and the last presenting wearied beauty as the rain washes them away.

But the thorn remains in place, defiant and beautiful in its own right. It stands guard always, even across the cold and frost and wind and, yes, the cold Oregon rain.

Beauty Faces Winter at the Solstice

Soon it is the solstice: the darkest day, the longest night. And winter sets in, cold, chill to the soul, no respite from longing. And sometimes it seems that winter takes the best and buries it in the ground, but we should never fret this way. First, we know that the new surges forward, even as early as January and February. But more to the point today, beauty survives and endures, something that matters to us all,
even if mostly only those of us who are older can see it.

I took these images this morning in the same rose garden from which so many of my florals were taken last summer. Of course, no one was there today but me, but then the clock is running
and I cannot afford to miss a moment's beauty any longer.

Another small coast moment, when the tide furrows around a shell and the shadow hides inside, and debris shows the way the tide pulled the water back into the sea.

    Interiors

Our image of the interior can reveal something of our inner nature. One common way to think of our interior, one I use, is to think of the inner self as a temple, which seems a good place to begin. Mine is inhabited by a number of monkeys and they can chatter incessantly, distracting me from thoughts that are important. And sometimes in my anger I feed those monkeys until they grow large and a bit dangerous.
So the trick is not to feed the monkeys until they go away.

Other images of the interior are more quiet and invite an understanding of inner solitude, which is the basis for calm, and for a few, peace.

So, some images then, from a number of fine artists of interiors.

Bird in the Dunes, Tottori, Japan 2001, by Rolfe Horn

Quite beautiful: minimal, classic, you can see how the wind moves in this still image.
I found this on the site by Wisechild, though it was discovered originally by Pixiestick.
