This photo shows the relationship between Focal Length (commonly shown on camera lenses as XXmm ) and distance of the camera from the subject. The subject is the cement pillar in the middle of the animated collection of photos. Using a lens that is telescopic, which means being able to adjust the Focal Length from say 18mm to 270mm, and moving the camera closer or farther away from the subject so that the apparent size of the object is approximately the same will change how much of the surrounding scenery can be seen in the photo. This can be used to dramatic effect as commonly seen in movies, or allows you to custom tailor your own photos to have as much or as little of the surrounding scenery visible in the photo. I Hope this is an adequate explanation :)

The engineer in me is screaming!!! The cycle length is too long to make adjustments smaller than 10 inches! Proof of concept is good, but if this is the finished product... You only get 10 inch increments from the point where you set it down. Otherwise if you have to make small adjustments, go back to the AGE-OLD design of, "Keep it simple, stupid." (i.e. scoot the desk)
