An interesting and off-the-wall bit of Key West-Monroe County trivia. The vast majority development and population of Monroe County Florida lies in the Florida Keys. On the other hand, the largest volume of land in Monroe County is in an all-but-uninhabited chunk of southwest Florida. I think I read once that the population of that portion of the county was around three hundred people, mostly members of the Miccosukee tribe. Monroe was one of the four original counties that made up Florida in the begining, but has since lost most of that land with development, and all that remains is that chunk in the lower left hand corner and the Keys.
