Joe Carbury, long-time announcer of the Calgary Stampede's Rangeland Derby (chuckwagon races), is apparently hurt that he was not selected to be parade marshall for this year's Calgary Stampede Parade. Instead, officials chose Mike Holmes (of HGTV's Holmes on Homes and other very popular shows), a much loved and renowned buiding contractor known for his no-nonsense and no-shortcuts approach to home building and renovation.
In a statement to CBC Calgary's Eyeopener, Joe claims that he does not know Mike Holmes, nor do most Albertans. I beg to differ. I think that more people would recognize Mike Holmes before they would recognize Joe Carbury.
To me, Mr. Carbury's reaction smells of sour grapes. He is simply upset because he was not chosen, even though he committed many years and countless hours to the Calgary Stampede. Joe simply cannot accept that people might not love him as much as he thinks they should. Mike Holmes, on the other hand, appears much more professional and humble. It's interesting that Joe, many years Mike's senior, cannot be mature enough to be happy for Mr. Holmes and move on.
Now, to be honest, I don't even like Mr. Carbury. But I do agree that he probably should have been chosen as this year's Parade Marshall. This, however, was not the decision of the committee.
Earth to Joe: "GET OVER IT!"
