CBC News - Montreal - Depressed woman loses benefits over...
Rated • 10 reviews • crime • cbc.ca
I'll concede that it was kind of dumb of this woman to put her vacation and strip club photos on Facebook. And perhaps she is a scam artist. I don't know the whole story. But I'm deeply disturbed by the comments being made on the CBC site about this situation because so many of them show a total lack of understanding about depression.
Just because someone goes out and socializes or takes a vacation doesn't mean they aren't depressed anymore. I know, because I've been there. My own personal experiences are strikingly similar to this woman's. I've been off work and on disability because of depression. I was on medication, but it wasn't enough. Part of my treatment - which was prescribed to me by my doctor - was to start engaging in life again. This meant going out with friends, participating in fun activities and, yes, even taking a holiday. Social isolation is one of the most devastating aspects of depression and remaining isolated doesn't get you better. It's ignorant to say that this woman wasn't depressed because she was on the beach in a bikini. What would they have her do? Stay in bed all day? How do you start to feel joy again by locking yourself away in your home?
The other point to make is that not everyone experiences depression in the same way. Even people who have gone through depression themselves are attacking this woman. Their depression wasn't like hers, therefore she's lying about her condition. "Eighteen months on disability is too long. She should have been better by now. She should be able to function just fine on her happy pills and get back to work." That's like saying everyone with cancer should be able to recover in the same amount of time on the same treatment.
When someone is severely depressed, it can take an extremely long time for them to reach a full functioning level again. Some never do get back to that state of "normal." This isn't something that's "just in your head" that you can suck up and get over. There are very real biological processes at work in depression, just as there are in other diseases like diabetes or cancer. This is an extremely serious illness and it can be fatal. But when people see that there is still so much stigma surrounding it, and so much judgment about it, they're reluctant to seek help and support out of shame and fear.
I wouldn't wish depression on anyone, but perhaps some of you self-righteous, ignorant, judgmental pricks need to experience it yourself so you can finally pull your heads out of your asses and see just how devastating and painful and REAL it is. -
