What was the purpose of heckling the President?
By Violet · Thursday, September 10th, 2009 ·
I've often wished we had a parliamentary democracy, and I've often wished we had the kind of rowdy name-calling and shouting that goes on in the British House of Commons. But we don't. And so it's shocking when a Congressman screams out in the middle of the President's speech, "You lie!"
What was the purpose of this outburst? The idiot Congressman who did the shouting -- Rep. Joe Wilson (TWIT) of South Carolina -- claims that he couldn't control himself. Bullshit. I think he was making a deliberate play for attention, which is exactly what he got. Immediately after the speech last night the news started filling up with stories not about the speech, but about the heckling.
Almost 24 hours later, that's still the picture. Look at this snapshot of Memeorandum from 6:40 pm today. The top nineteen stories are about the shouting Congressman. Nineteen. Then there are a few stories about the speech itself -- waaaay down the page -- and then it's on to John Stossel.
Of course, anybody could have predicted this. Anybody could have foreseen clearly that a Congressman screaming "You lie!" at the President during a joint session would dominate the news cycle. Anybody.
The result? Joe Wilson gets a ton of free publicity, and nobody pays any attention to what the President said. Except us progressives and healthcare reform advocates, who are quietly drinking ourselves blind.
By the way: my favorite part of the speech? The part where Obama lumped in abortions with death panels and illegal aliens and other crazy-ass shit his healthcare plan would never pay for. Fuck you, Obama. Just fuck you.
