Instead of the normal channels that electronic goods pass through to get to retailers, Kogan order their stock directly from the manufacturer and sell direct to the public, cutting out the middlemen - the difference is at the bottom line, with some markedly cheap prices. Not a bad effort for the 25 year old Ruslan Kogan, although some of the forums have quality concerns over the LCD displays that add to the doubt most people have about big ticket items online.

Taking an obvious leaf from Distributed Proofreaders (pgdp.net), Ancestry has decided to let the public swarm over their undigitised records, and help turn them into searchable data. This will no doubt save them money and get some free advertising at the same time. Not that there's anything wrong with that, as it's a worthwhile project to contribute to and every record that is digitised will be available for free, so they won't directly profit from volunteers hard work.

This huge collection of old music is an immense one-man archive project, that until recently enjoyed being undiscovered by mostly everybody. After a minor hiccup (his host Yahoo killed him temporarily) he's back to full steam, digitsing his old 78s and uploading for everybody to hear.

Although it's completely unrestored everything I've heard is listenable, and it's great to think that most of this stuff will never make it to digital apart from his (albeit primitive) recordings.

I just wish somebody with some time would step up and redesign the site for him, so he could concentrate on the music!

I'm worried about the durability of the rubber end (especially with some of the odd screws/nails protruding into the guttering that I've come across), and I'm sure if there were any sheared metal edges inside (think leftover fascia) they'd make short work of the Looj. The only other negative is that it clearly misses a lot of gunk, especially the bad stuff that sticks to the bottom. Still for the price you really can't wrong, especially if you live on the side of a hill or have a double storey house.
