    Longing is the core of mystery.
    Longing itself brings the cure.
    The only rule is, Suffer the pain.

    Your desire must be disciplined,
    and what you want to happen
    in time, sacrificed.

    Rumi - The Essential Rumi - Coleman Barks

    SONNET 116
    Let me not to the marriage of true minds
    Admit impediments. Love is not love
    Which alters when it alteration finds,
    Or bends with the remover to remove:
    O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
    That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
    It is the star to every wandering bark,
    Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
    Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
    Within his bending sickle's compass come:
    Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
    But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
    If this be error and upon me proved,
    I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

    W. Shakespeare

  • Meditation: Sublime States: Equanimity (upekkha)

    Rated Jan 01 2008 3 reviews buddhism buddhanet.net

    From the page: "Equanimity is the crown and culmination of the four sublime states. But this should not be understood to mean that equanimity is the negation of love, compassion, and sympathetic joy, or that it leaves them behind as inferior. Far from that, equanimity includes and pervades them fully, just as they fully pervade perfect equanimity."

    There's nothing occult going on:
    It's not as if the skull opens
    Along its ancient fissures
    Like a bone lotus spreading
    Its petals so as to to let a blue
    Light leak out.

    Nothing
    At all like that. No magic.
    What happens is natural:
    The heart uttering its hurt
    And its happiness: syllables
    Whose rhythm captures
    The pulse of sorrow or joy,
    The slow ache or throb of it.

    And what occurs next can be
    Explained by the physics of feeling,
    By that science through which
    Emotion becomes motion,
    Love jolting the sleeper awake.

    Rest your cheek, for a moment,
    on this drunken cheek.
    Let me forget the war and cruelty inside myself.
    I hold these silver coins in my hand;
    give me Your wine of golden light.
    You have opened the seven doors of heaven;
    now lay Your hand generously on my tightened heart.
    All I have to offer is this illusion, my self.
    Give it a nickname at least that is real.
    Only you can restore what You have broken;
    help my broken head.
    I'm not asking for some sweet pistachio candy,
    but Your everlasting love.
    Fifty times I've said,
    "Heart, stop hunting and step into this net."

    Absence ceases to exist

    Eight o'clock bells and
    The sky full of sun
    Bring you near
    As I sit
    Alone,
    Quiet and still.

    O, radiant heart,
    O, song.
