Dave Lindorff: The First Cut is the Deepest

From the page: "If we cut the US military budget down to a paltry $115 billion a year, that would still leave us with by far the largest military budget in the entire world. The next biggest spender on its military is China, at $62.5 billion, followed by Russia, at $62 billion. That is to say, our military budget, if slashed by three quarters, would still be about equal to Russia's and China's military budgets combined."

THIS isn't well publicized! Since 2004, there has been a consensus among Muslim scholars that members of ANY of the major schools of Muslim thought (Sunni, Shi'ite, Sufi, etc.) are "real Muslims" and NO school can call the others "not Muslim." The sectarian wars among Muslims are HERETICAL.

Christians and Muslims together committed to peace. From the page: "Muslims and Christians together make up well over half of the world's population. Without peace and justice between these two religious communities, there can be no meaningful peace in the world. The future of the world depends on peace between Muslims and Christians. The basis for this peace and understanding already exists. It is part of the very foundational principles of both faiths: love of the One God, and love of the neighbour."

More than 130 Muslim scholars called for peace and understanding between Islam and Christianity, saying "If Muslims and Christians are not at peace, the world cannot be at peace. With the terrible weaponry of the modern world; with Muslims and Christians intertwined everywhere as never before, no side can unilaterally win a conflict between more than half of the world's inhabitants."

No More Victims was founded in September 2002 to combat militarism by putting a focus on direct relief to its victims. Their mission is to restore health and well-being to victims of war and to advocate and educate for peace.
"We work to find medical sponsorships for war-injured Iraqi children and to forge ties between the children, their families and communities in the United States. Medical infrastructure and services continue to deteriorate in Iraq. We urge citizens to demand that the those responsible for the occupation comply with U.S. Domestic Law and obligations under International Humanitarian Law, with special emphasis on Article 55 of the Fourth Geneva Convention."

One of the Seattle peace actions going on this week: Fred Miller of PeaceAction WA has organized a group that will be walking continuously from March 15 to March 19. Based on the estimate that roughly 655,000 Iraqis had been killed by last July, the participants will walk 655,000 steps (248 miles) "to remember the cost of this war, and to give the people of the Seattle metropolitan area a chance to take a few steps for peace."
