One of the things they could have cleared up in a civics class is the distinction between laws that legislate a common morality, like laws against murder, rape, and theft -- which, regardless of any beliefs system you adhere to, are acts that harm others -- and laws that are based solely on a religious authority. "God said homosexuality/abortion/mixed couples dancing (whatever) is wrong" is not a valid basis for laws that are going to be binding on everyone; not everybody agrees on the authority of your God.
