A perfect system is a system aware of its own imperfection. The truly perfect system is a system which is nil and following all.

POW - Opera Unite for Firefox users&-&The Red Ferret Journal...

For those that have been not on any major tech news site over the, say 2, days Opera Software recently released Opera Unite unite.opera.com [unite.opera.com] which is a DNS driven distributed server embedded directly in the Opera browser (version 10, beta so far). However, I like Firefox and am severely addicted to the add-ons provided.. so.. its useful that Firefox has had this feature as an add-on since 2008 - enter: POW https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3002 the Unite for the Firefox browser! :)
Danske forskere slår kræft ihjel på 48 timer - Viden
May 31, 1:34pm    (1 review)  cancer, research, rna, mir-129  http://www.berlingske.dk/article/2009053...
New research from small Danish hospital has determined that the RNA micro molecule that is responsible for cell replication in bladder-tissue (miR 129) is completely absent from bladder-tumors. Its absence is in effect what causes the cancer to replicate in unlimited fashion. Now the really exciting thing is that miR 129 can be injected into cancer cells and when this is done they die within 48 hours. That is obviously quite nice, now... because of the bureaucracy surrounding new pharmaceuticals a drug may be available in 10 years. This has to change if the first world countries want to stay on top of the research game. It is currently too slow a process :/

Lifehacker - Break Googles Monopoly on Your Data: Switch to Yahoo Search...

Funny enough I started using Yahoo instead of Google a few weeks ago - Gina Trapani is right in this article: most of the time the two engines are completely equal and I'm sure its good for brain plasticity to look at a different logo for a bit.

Brilliant little guide on how to overclock Yonah T2300 core duo processor - my experience is that this will only work if the native power management on the laptop is disabled (I have a T2400 Core Duo Toshiba laptop).. so be prepared for noise.. and heat.. and noise.. and a slightly faster laptop ;)
How Room Designs Affect Your Work and Mood: Scientific American
May 17, 10:18am    (2 reviews)  architecture, health, business, mind, mood  http://www.scientificamerican.com/articl...
Is mood and mind significantly affected by the architecture of the room and environment in which you're working? A resounding YES is the answer from this American Scientific article on the subject. Here's a summary list of correlations from the article:

  • Creativity and abstract thought - high ceilings (2007, Joan Meyers-Levy)

  • Focus on details - low ceilings (2007, Joan Meyers-Levy)

  • Attention capacity - view of nature (2000, Nancy Wells)

  • Mental focus - view of nature (2000, Nancy Wells)

  • Relaxation - view of nature (2008, Stephen Kaplan)

  • Learning - natural view of nature (2009, C. Kenneth Tanner)

  • Learning - more natural day light (1999, H. Mahone Group)

  • Social relaxation - carpets(!) (2000, Debra Harris)

There is also a number of references in the article dealing with improving the health of sick/challenged people (elderly,ADD..etc), these have been omitted from the above list.

"The lessons of the documentary "Crossing Borders"-- and the film is not subtle about them -- are so self-evident, you might think there's no need to convey them. But that would be a mistake. In 2007, the German filmmaker Arnd Wächter brought four college-age Americans to Morocco to join four Moroccans of similar age for a weeklong tour of their country."

"... sometimes enlightening, sometimes fractious exchanges touch on subjects like Islamic perceptions of the West and vice versa, the war in Iraq (fleetingly) and (more fleetingly) the role of women in Arab society."
ProxGlobalKey - allow global hotkey to bypass/enable the prx!
May 7, 7:36am    (1 review)  software, proxomitron, hotkey, proxglobalkey, software-augmentation  http://prxbx.com/forums/showthread.php?t...
Small utility designed to augment the Proxomitron web-filter program to allow for a global on/off switch. Since the source-code for the Proxomitron is not available and the author is sadly not with us any longer this type of augmentation provides interesting way to support otherwise orphaned software.
:: Planetary Skin ::
May 6, 6:27am    (2 reviews)  environment, planetary-skin, nasa, cisco, teilhard-de-chardin  http://www.planetaryskin.org/
"Online collaborative global monitoring platform, called the "Planetary Skin" meant to capture, collect, analyze and report data on environmental conditions around the world.

NASA and Cisco are work together to develop the Planetary Skin to be an online collaborative platform to capture and analyze data from satellite, airborne, sea- and land-based sensors across the globe. This data will then be made available for the general public, governments and businesses to measure, report and verify environmental data in near-real-time to help them detect and adapt to global climate change."

Personal note
Also, read the introduction to the "Phenomenon of Man" (authored by Teilhard de Chardin, published in English in 1959) by Julian Huxley. What is now taking place with projects such as "Planetary Skin" is basically the unfolding of of Teilhard called the personification of the planet. Teilhard is in other words more relevant than ever. Personally I recommend starting out with "The Future of Man" since it contains adequately sums up much of the content in "The Phenomenon of Man" while managing to add substantial extra material.
Slashdot | Think-Tank Warns of Internet "Brownouts" Starting Next Year

Another 'think-tank' have managed to come out with yet another 'exaflood' prediction. Term was first coined in 2007 by Bret Swanson (conservative 'think-tank' Discovery Institute) who predicted that the net will somehow magically flip over and die due to online media usage unless Net Neutrality was promptly dropped.
