Oh man...this brings me back to when I was a kid. Some people might think this is crazy, those who are not from where I am that is, but it really is one of the funnest rodeos you could ever witness.
What they do is select only a few inmates, or jailbirds, as they like to call them, to compete in this annual event. The ones chosen are usually cowboys at heart, and some have a life sentence for their crime(s). Very few, if any, have prior experience. They do train very hard for this annual event, and are given proper attire to compete. It's been a blessing for most who do get involved, and it gives them a sense of rehabilitation. You can ask them yourself. They look forward to it all year. But, there's a lot of work involved, it's definitely not a walk in the park.
They have built a wonderful new facility right on the prison grounds. When I was growing up, there was only a barbed wire fence around the arena, and they could only fit a little over 150 people at a time. The new facility holds now up to 14,000 people and has a brick wall around the arena, along with local merchants who set up booths. (Geez..we only had roasted peanuts and popcorn)
Each inmate who competes, takes it seriously and knows what they are doing. This is part of our American tradition and heritage, and something you have to experience before you can say anything about it.
It's well worth it!
