XP add-on to toggle hidden files?

sparksterJul 12, 2007 11:23pm
Something I find myself repeatedly having to do is going into the explorer menu to switch back and forth between showing and hiding hidden files.

Is there some sort of an add-on for the explorer that simplifies this? I'm thinking a button on the toolbar to toggle the view would be really nice. (I have a "new folder" button which is awesome, for example.)

I don't know of an addon myself, but you could always create a shortcut on your desktop- would cut out a couple steps, anyway...

#1: You don't want to always show hidden files?

Per #2: You could create a registry command to toggle 2 (hide)/1 (show)
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Hidden

How'd you put the New Folder button?

1: I was wanting something just like that too - could not find anything for it ... not "hidden files" (see pink area in this image) but the "protected files" (yellow highlight) I wanted to be able to toggle ...

3: much too skittish to go playing in the registry ... at this time ...

3: There are lots of files which trash up the view (and even desktop) like thumbnail files or folders with configuration or database files that I normally want to avoid in normal work.

I ended up installing a nice explorer replacement called FreeCommander that provides the ability to designate a keyboard shortcut to hide and unhide, and that's working quite nicely. :o)

I got the "New Folder" button with a small freeware program called bxNewFolder that I got here: baxbex.com/products.html [baxbex.com/products.html]

Thanks for the advice, everyone!
