StumbleUpon Music Player

Yesterday I had another idea (inspired by c-h-l-o-e):

A "StumbleUpon Music Player" :-)

The most web music players are using Flash or a
related technique to play music, so they need the
object or embed HTML tag - which is sadly not
allowed on SU user pages. So it is not possible to
embed a music player directly into the own userpage.

I had a idea for this problem:
I just create a frameset on my own webspace (jonasjohn.de)
consisting of two frames (top, bottom). The top frame
contains the MP3 flash player and the bottom frame
links directly to my SU page (hxseven.stumbleupon...).

If the visitor now clicks on the link to the frameset
he will still see the SU page, but with an Music player
above.

See the live example on my userpage:
hxseven.stumbleupon.com [hxseven.stumbleupon.com]

What do you think of this idea?

Should I extend this player, so that anybody can use it?
or is the idea not really good... ? -- do you want to use it?

Jonas :)

Interesting idea. I'd check with the devs before making it widely available though (which, from personal experience, might take a while) - and take into account the pull on bandwidth from the SU user-base (which may or may not be an issue for you) :D

Well, the traffic might be a problem, but the MP3s are not hosted on my server, they get loaded from the official band sites...

I could make the player downloadable so that everybody can install it on his own webspace :) ?

That could be a good alternative. I suppose streaming from an external site wouldn't impact on your bandwidth (or would it?)...but I think replicating the SU pages would be more of an issue though.

No the streaming from an external site does not affect my bandwitdth.

Replicating SU pages? - Well, I just link the SU page, I do not download or mirror the page to my webserver. -- just the player page get's loaded from my webspace...

I meant in terms of providing an alternative portal for 'SU content'...the devs may have an issue with that - thats why I mentioned clearing it with them first.

I find it hard to believe that they would see any problem with this.
It's still the browser who fetch the SU page.
But as you say its probably best to clear it up with them first, probably.

Looks easy to setup the player.
Is there a tool for generating the playlist or is it done manually?
(You're missing an endtag for the playlist tag btw.)

I don't think I would have any reason to use it but I find the idea interesting.
Btw, did you make the whole thing yourself?

an old idea: "StumbleUpon/LastFM-like" integrated site, independently or not.
last.fm [last.fm]

The success may be a bit much?

#5 there is nothing wrong with your own version of a "stumbleupon/last fm-like" site. Remember that StumbleUpon isn't an original idea.

Naver in South Korea has been doing this for years with much more success:
naver.com [naver.com]

(a hybrid Stumbleupon/Pandora would even be nice)
pandora.com [pandora.com]

I can't wait to use it. I think it looks good too plus I'm always uploading tracks because people ask me what music I like, well now they can hear it for themselves. it's teh w00t.

I make all of my mp3s simple links with a target=_blank attribute to spit them into a new window with a plugin viewer. Then anyone can just go File>Save As... and save a copy for themselves. It seems like custom players generally inhibit downloading a mp3 copy, and I hate not being able to archive a killer song or video I like (THANKS YOUTUBE) on disc

oh- but i would do something like hxseven suggests if you just gotta have a player there rather than a browser plugin player
