Introduction If you want to try out Ubuntu Linux and Windows Vista but you want to keep the convenience of your Windows XP desktop then triple boot Windows XP, Vista and Ubuntu. You can have all three operating systems on one computer. Follow these instructions to learn how.

Instructions
Difficulty: Challenging Steps

1 Step One Install Windows Vista on your computer that currently has the Windows XP operating system. Put the software CD in the CD drive and it should load automatically. If it fails to do so then go to your "Start" menu and select "Run" then locate your CD drive and click on the .exe file.

2 Step Two Download Ubuntu Live from ubuntu.com and burn the ISO file to a CD. Boot the CD on your computer.

3 Step Three Go to "System," "Administration," and "Gnome Partition Editor." Add 2 partitions for Ubuntu. Create the first partition at 3GB with an EXT3 file system and the second partition should be 1GB with Linux Swap.

4 Step Four Follow the step-by-step directions of the graphic installer. This will help you to install Ubuntu correctly.

5 Step Five Run Automatix on your operating system in order to install applications of your choice. Because Ubuntu is free it only comes with the free applications. Go to "Applications," "Terminal" and then follow the instructions to run Automatix. Restart Ubuntu.

6 Step Six Look around your new operating system. Everything should work exactly as expected with a ton of new programs. Tips & Warnings

  • If you're not satisfied with your new operating system and want to go back to your original XP program then insert your XP installation CD and select "Repair your XP Installation."

Vista SP1 RC1 available to testers Posted on Thursday 10 January 2008 12:42 Today, Microsoft released the latest pre-release build of SP1 - `Windows Vista SP1 RC Refresh' -- to approximately 15,000 beta testers. This group includes corporate customers, consumer enthusiasts, software and hardware vendors, and others. The code is not available for public download.

"We are still on schedule to deliver SP1 RTM in Q1 CY08. The final release date is based on quality, so we will continue to track customer and partner feedback from the beta program before setting a final date." The newest refresh of SP1 RC1 is available to testers. It is still on course for February. I'm looking forward to it, as I am still running the first RC1 release.

Word on the Microsoft street is the Vista team is aiming to deliver the final SP1 code at the same time as Windows Server 2008 becomes available, which is expected in February (and some time before the big Windows Server 2008/SQL Server 2008/Visual Studio 2008 launch on February 27, 2008).8).

Vista users a Must read:
CHICAGO (Reuters) -- Microsoft has agreed to modify its new Vista operating system in response to complaints that its desktop search function puts Google Inc. and other potential competitors at a disadvantage, a source familiar with the case told Reuters Tuesday.
freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1853279/posts [freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1853279/posts]

by ShadowAce

The Justice Department and Microsoft are expected to provide details of the proposed changes in a joint report filed in federal court later Tuesday, the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The source provided no details on what changes Microsoft had agreed to make.A spokesman for Microsoft had no immediate comment.

Report: More flaws found in Microsoft's VistaIn a complaint filed with the Justice Department in December, Google said a feature built into Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system that allows users to search a computer's hard drive did not leave room for competition from other desktop search applications.

Google

(Charts,

Fortune 500) contends that feature violates the consent decree that monitors Microsoft's conduct as part of its settlement with the U.S. government in its landmark antitrust case against the company.

Windows on the Mac changes everything

The New York Times
reported earlier in June that some state officials were alarmed by Google's complaint. But the newspaper said the Justice Department's antitrust chief had backed Microsoft and urged them to reject Google's complaint.
Microsoft (Charts,

Fortune 500) has said it did not believe it had run afoul of the antitrust settlement.

GD...Vista takes for ever on a fast system to acess external Drives
Everyone want's to "tweak" the system so they can feel 31337, but they really have no idea what they are doing.

"Hey, let me turn off all the new things that Vista has, then complain that Vista has nothing new!"

What can i do to speed it up on aceessing data
Windows Vista's search engine keeps an index of files for fast advanced searching. If you have a fast spare hard drive and you have a huge search index you can speed up searching a bit by moving the search index to the faster hard drive. Change the Vista Search Index Location
  1. Type index in the search box on the Start Menu.
  2. Click Indexing Options in the search results.
  3. Click Advanced. change_search_index_location1.PNG
  4. Click Select new. change_search_index_location2.PNG
  5. Browse to the new location of the search index using the arrows to the left of the folders. change_search_index_location3.PNG Click OK when you're done.
  6. Restart your computer.

Make Vista build search index faster?

forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php [forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php]

I find that the indexer really only bogs the system down during the initial indexing phase (which could take anywhere from hours to days depending on how many folders you've asked it to include on the internal and assorted external drives, and whether you give it time to run on its own for a while during this time period, which is obviously a lot faster as it doesn't have to "reduce speed due to user activity") - after that it only seems to run sporadically now and then, and what I've gained in usefulness and search speed has been well worth that. I usually use the search features several times a day in large folders and love the instant results.

I find that some of those "lean and mean" Vista tweaks are actually somewhat counter productive on computers used mostly for desktop work rather than gaming systems.
Good advice.

This week has brought more rumblings about the successor to Windows Vista, currently known by its "Windows 7" code name. It's still not clear what information is fact and what is fiction, but there are a few hints that it may arrive earlier than its previously expected date of 2010.

A user at the Neowin forums claims to have used an early copy and says this: You can see that Microsoft is aiming to fine tune this release as the case in XP rather than technological advancement as in 2K. Highlights include "network aware", with improved connection tools and detections. It will have the ability to detect which network you're in and switch your settings and devices accordingly; With Live account, you can carry your IE settings and favorites with you; Gadget data caching; New Calculator, Paint, and WordPad using WPF; install to desktop in 10 mins with only 1 reboot; instant streaming; better battery mileage, etc.

How to Get Vista to Play nice?
Codec or filterCodecs have always been a big problem for the computer users
Vista Codec Package 4.5.6 Final

YOU MUST UNINSTALL your previous version. DO NOT upgrade with this release!

With this package installed, you shouldn't need to install any other . That's because there has never been a 100% viable working solution available for the average computer user.

There are several good codec package solutions out there, but none of them did everything I wanted. I was always in need of a tweak, adjustment, or even a reinstallation just to get the codecs I needed/wanted and most of the time, the file still didn't play. I've never claimed to be a media guru. My media experience is to doubleclick a file I downloaded and hope that it plays.

What I do know is how to package software. So I decided to package some codecs and share them with the rest of the world. With this package all possible conflicts are already dealt with. Many user suggested default settings are implemented.

If you have a suggestion of improvement, I'm listening.

It does not contain a media player and it doesn't associates filetypes. With this package installed you will be able to use any media player, limited only by the players' capabilities, to play DVD's, movies and video clips of almost any filetype.

Streaming video is supported in all popular web browsers. By default you won't need to make any adjustments to enjoy a variety of media content immediately.

Users have the ability to choose what is installed using the public redistributable or after an unattended install, you can select to remove specific portions without removing the entire package. Future releases will recognize previous releases and are capable of performing upgrade installations. Is it possible to take a drive image of XP (Which is on a different computer)
and then use it to dual boot onto a new computer which has Vista home edition pre - installed???

As some of you might know, I work as a full time volunteer for
The Coaltion of Disabled People Coalition (It's a local charity) and just recently we received some funding, with which I was lucky enough to be able to buy 5 new computers and monitors, As I said above, they all have Vista home edition installed, and unfortunately alot of our software is not compatible with it. especially our software for the visually impaired (We have Lunaplus 6.02) I have been in contact with the company and the upgrades will cost £2409.00 which we do not have at the moment.

I'm not asking you for donations, Just some help to find a way around our problem so that we can carry on teaching,

p.s. A tutorial in non tech would be helpful as well

Regards
kangkid

A Vista license automatically covers you for any and all previous versions of Windows, so as far as XP licenses go you don't need them. If you purchased the computers brand new, you may be entitled to a "downgrade" CD (Microsoft has reluctantly made these available but they're generally not included with your purchase). Might be your best option. As far as dual-booting, you'd first need a sizeable partition on the hard drive to install XP onto. If it's not already configured that way, you'll need to reformat the drive or try a third-party drive partitioning program that would enable you to change the size of the existing C: partition. That option would be costly since you would then to purchase XP licenses plus the partioning software, so probably not a good option. An existing image will not work either unless the drive image is from an identical or nearly identical PC. Hope that helps?

Thanks Dsc
my mistake the licences are for the lunaplus software, not Microsoft
I have a copy of partition magic which I hope will work (Not tried it yet)
as far as room they all have 80Gb so I think there will be space,
From the sound of it I'm going to have to figure a different way of doing a dual boot.
Once again thanks
