My question about backing up on the same system you're using...aren't you using double the ram space? Wouldn't it be better to back-up on an external hard drive, saving space and safety...I love my vista, the switching windows are amazing, you can do so much more with 'waiting' windows while you are working in another window. I'm thinking of using my flash drive to start the
back-up. Clearly I'm not a techie, but would you mind telling me what you think? I tried backing up with the Back-up/Restore, it caused such problems, I gave it up. thx :)
Thats a good question: Here is my stab at it: Yes if you back up your vista drive: Yes you would be using at least 8 more gB of Hard drive Space and yes it would seems to make great sense to back up to an external drive.
--- If you have ever tried it even once eather burning a back to dvds or backing up to an external haedrive via usb 2.o you will know it can Forever and can take take 4-9 hours some times Backing up and Resotring each way.
4 to 9 hours....
It would be faster to do a Fresh install Right...?
With my Xp machine I can back up via Ghost (Ghost 11.0) (should use Ghost 12.00 for vista) in 15 -20 minute
s and restore it in 15 to 20 minnutes.
(TO AN INTERNAL HARD Drive on the Same Machine)
When backing up to cd or usb if there is one small hic-up in the Rstore/backup process.... you're S O L
you lost your time and all that data.
That is I suggest buying a couple of honking internal drives to make a system back. From my hours of trial and error I also I recommend you back up any import ant files by copying them and pasting them on an internal or external drive...ie home photos etc and burning a back up.
Even back up in important stuff a couple of times ........
and keep them away from your home and office if they are really important. Ia can not tell you how many important phots I have lost in the last 6 years since the start of the digital craze...
Although I have not tried but with new ESATA (3gb's a second) might make great external Back up Drives :0
Try this:
This is an Esata Drive that I am looking at for back up purposes
I am kind of exsited to see it speed..since Vista is so slow
My XP was kept by Dell and was sent a Vista with absolutely no idea how to use it. That's Dell's "system exchange". My xp was one of those laptops that burned up. scorching hot. all but blew up. Then I got this. I had two 'system exchanges' in a row. on the same warranty.
I do appreciate your help. Thanks ;) Oh wow, that is awesome.(it just rolled out in front of my eyes, it wasn't here before) That's as big as my laptop, but it's worth it to save my stuff, my last shot before everything's gone, thanks really :).
103 Dell is still selling Xp until next June Next year because of so many Vista problems.....I would raise a stink with upper management ..skip the customer service department and as for an full copy of Xp
And load that on your vista Machine and run vista a a dule boot.
thanks, you deal with Dell on any level and tell me how it works out for you :(. I know how things stand re xp/vista/manangement, what's right, what's wrong. I'm having enough problems running vista on a vista os, I'm waiting for the day when I'm not having to deal with dell for anything, thanks though.
My buddy had dell techs out to his house to try and fix his computer 5 times, He finally asked me to look at it, so I told him he needed a new video card. Dell sent him one, I replaced it and everything worked fine. When they called him back, they tried to get my name and number.
I spend more time these days getting vista off of peoples computers, I am not saying that I use the best programs, but everywhere I go - more & more people are having problems with it.
I have enough friends that work in IT/service and I am sure that I am happy without their madness.

Oh God, take those numbers from out in front of my eyes!!! Aaarrrrggggghhhh!!! Oh, sorry, deep breath.
Yes, I've just received an alert that I need to download Intel's Media Graphics Accelerator card. So I went to the download page. There are 539 options. most xp adaptable. I couldn't find what I needed. It happens all the time. They give you their solution under their "Problems and Solutions" game, but the solution most of the time is not there, and you're referred to Windows Live or Windows Marketplace.
The trick to calling Dell is to call the XPS number and enter the express code, then cross your fingers. You're still dealing with Dell.
I live on an island, I'm a little worried about my extended "on-site" warranty.
