Introduction
DirectX 10 gaming has been promised to us for a LONG time: it was way back in November of last year that we saw our first bit of DX10-ready hardware in the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX graphics card. Since then, we have had Microsoft's Vista operating system released to consumers in January and AMD/ATI joining the DX10 graphics card market in May.
Games are another story, as they have been dripping out in demos, technology showcases and patches since the beginning of the summer. Both sides of the hardware dispute have been throwing punches at the other in regards to "cheating" or other allegations on the first run of DX10 benchmarks but we finally have the answer to all those disputes: retail games that YOU can buy. Neither AMD nor NVIDIA has excuses now as the games are on shelves and their hardware and software better be up to the task they have both claimed victory in since early this year.
DX10 Titles
The first couple of titles that actually used DirectX 10 were existing games with patches applied to them. Both Company of Heroes and Supreme Commander had told us in the past that a DX10 upgrade was in the works but only Company of Heroes kept their word; Supreme Commander will be DX9 only. Company of Heroes uses DX10 rendering paths as of the 1.7.1 patch and adds support for litter objects (based on basic physic properties), more detailed terrain, much better explosions and improved smoke effects.
Lost Planet DX10
Lost Planet is another title with DX10 support that we'll be using in our testing; originally sold as an Xbox 360 title, Lost Planet has some very graphically strenuous sections to it. The DirectX 10 version adds some newer snow effects, better smoke effect and dramatically better looking shadows. Lost Planet is one of the slightly "tainted" benchmarks from our DX10 benchmark fiasco article; read up to see any details on that but I think now that the game is in the retail space, it's definitely fair game.
The other title from that editorial is Call of Juarez, the title distributed by AMD before their HD 2900 XT launch. Of all the DX10 titles that we are using in this article, I have been most impressed with the visual quality of this one. Both the DX9 and DX10 versions of the game are impressive, but DX10 adds greatly improved shaders for textures, HDR lighting, water effects and better shadowing. These effects really add up to a better visual quality under the DX10 version of the game and could be the first really impressive next-gen title.

You will need copies to send to creditors, collection agencies, banks, credit bureaus and others.
- Request free credit reports from each of the three major nationwide credit bureaus. The reports are free because you believe they contain inaccurate information due to fraud. Go over each report with a fine tooth comb looking for accounts that you did not apply for, did not open and for inquiries that you did not authorize.
- Request that each credit bureau block the reporting of items related to identity theft on your report. In order to do this you will have to provide the credit bureaus with proof of identity theft which amounts to supplying the police report you filed. This action blocks the creditor from sending the account in question out for collection.
- Contact all of your creditors including utilities and banks to find out if your accounts have been compromised or if someone has tried to open new accounts in your name. If you do this by phone ask to speak to someone in security or in the fraud department and be sure to follow-up any conversation with a confirming letter. You should send the letter by certified mail. It may prove to be a good idea to ask to close any current accounts and re-poen them under a new number but this may not correct the problem and may even contribute to damaging your credit history more that the identity theft has already done.
- Fill out an FTC identity theft affidavit. This form may be found on the FTC website. The information provided will enable your creditor to properly investigate your claim of identity theft. You may be asked to provide more information by individual creditors. Comply with additional information requests promptly.
- Contact the Postal Service to see if anyone has filed a change of address form in your name. The change of address form is an important piece of evidence supporting your claim of identity theft.
- Keep concise, dated records of all conversations other encounters you have with everyone you notify about the theft. Make copies of all correspondence you have (in both directions) with creditors and others that address the issue of identity theft.
- Contact your local Social Security office to see if there has been fraudulent use of your SSN Look for earnings reported on jobs you have never held which, again, provides excellent evidence that your identity has been stolen.
