I think AI may well come into it's own when 1. we know more about the brain, and 2. when we manage to build a functional biological "cell" processor...

Well that would be if you were going to model AI on what we and our brains do.
Given that you can start from scratch, there could be far better ways that the ones we use.
I think AI will really come into its own when it is seen as 'Intelligence' rather than 'a model of our Intelligence'
Maybe if we meet aliens, they will have their own ai systems with them...
In some sense WE are all AI. We were created by something bigger than us. And just look at what were doing. Were debating about it. As we likley will with everyone we meet.
Back on topic for a moment, one of the most amazing scientific advancements in my lifetime is digital photography. I remember reading about how two big names in the photography world (maybe it was kodak and canon) were joining forces to develop the technology to create digital cameras - at the time I thought, nah that will never work. People aren't going to abandon film and the quality will never be as good. Ha!
Oh, and video game technology if that counts as a scientific achievement! I remember playing the space invaders on an Atari. How far things have come since then.
I think Desktop Fabricators -- like a printer for real objects. They are here now, and to some degree affordable. Personal laser cutters, CriCut paper cutter, stereo lithography. It will be amazing when anyone who wants one can make custom parts, objects.
