"Unfortunately, calculus can epitomize what's wrong with math education. " Thumbs up just for that line.

From the page: "A premature focus on rigor dissuades students and makes math hard to learn."

I might just be having a maths-orgasm? Now, can we chuck out the maths books and play on the floor with stuff?

Yes, yes, calculus is scary, though not as scary as how it is often taught. We have an interesting site that takes you through the basics in a way you may not have seen before. Interesting on it's own, someone you know really wants to know about this site.

If only Calculus would be taught intuitively. Of course that would mean that too many people would pass and some other class would become the gatekeeper. Obviously schools notice when half or more of a class drops or flunks Calc so their inaction happens for a reason...Or so my honors Calc prof told me. Funny how after the first month our pace cut in half!

"I have a love/hate relationship with calculus: it demonstrates the beauty of math and the agony of math education.

Calculus relates topics in an elegant, brain-bending manner. My closest analogy is Darwin窶s Theory of Evolution: once understood, you start seeing Nature in terms of survival. You understand why drugs create stronger germs (survival of the fittest). You know why sugar and fat taste sweet (encourage consumption of high-calorie foods in times of scarcity). It all fits together."

You either get calculus right off or you don't. If you don't, here's an approach that can make it accessible.

Very good! Finally someone who agrees that math is no harder than art or reading and writing. This is actually a big problem; when I tell my fellow non-science college friends that I do physics they automatically become scared and quickly get discouraged. I feel it's a big problem with the education system here in the states...

Reading the comments, I guess I'm the only person in the world who had a *good* calculus teacher and doesn't feel that their high school math education was that bad? I guess I'm just lucky.
