I've always wondered if there was a utility that does this. This especially is a problem when listening to files with different bit rates.

This is the best sound normalizing software out there. Not only does it adjust the volume for all the songs have the same volume level, but it does this without loosing quality!

Seems like a great thing, but I use ogg files and I'd like to only alter the playback stream volume, not the volume of the files themselves. I'd like my audio player to do this exact thing.

Get your mp3s' volumes standardized so you can leave your volume switch alone
Very nice.
Open Source. Of course!

MP3Gain does not just do peak normalization, as many normalizers do. Instead, it does some statistical analysis to determine how loud the file actually sounds to the human ear.
Also, the changes MP3Gain makes are completely lossless. There is no quality lost in the change because the program adjusts the mp3 file directly, without decoding and re-encoding."
