Sweet...will be doing this in the spring, perhaps, now that I have a balcony again.
I made one of these this spring. First off, DO sand it down, as pallets are full of splinters. Secondly, use a double layer of landscaping fabric, you will need the strength. Thirdly, go nuts with staples on the landscaping cloth; a staple gun is very handy there. Fourthly and most importantly: No matter how much you think you've packed the soil in, pack it in some more!!! I thought I'd done a good job but no. It's sunk down quite a bit and next spring I will need to pack quite a lot more mix into it.
I think I'm also going to try to nail some wood strips across the back, too. The reason is that no matter how tightly you staple the landscaping fabric onto the back, the weight of the potting mix will make it "pooch out", and I want to give it some more support.
Lastly...these things are HEAVY (I'm guessing mine is near 100 lbs) so plan for that. Unless you are quite strong, you will have trouble angling it around during the year to follow the sun. If you are standing it or leaning it up, you may want to consider putting some bricks or cinderblock in front of it to make sure it stays in place. I currently have mine leaning against a sawhorse; that way I can spray the back (the weedblock) with the hose as well as watering from the top and front.

What a fantastic idea! Recently, I've been considering using recycled gardening materials--this is perfect for an upcoming project.
Does anyone ever actually build these things, and get it to work? In my experience, most plants want plenty of soil to thrive, and when being put into small "pockets" they just end up looking utterly miserable. Bought a strawberry plant pot once, and ended up smashing the damn thing. It's all about good old fashioned good sized containers and pots for me from now on.
