Certainly an interesting break down, but the review seems to only find ways to make shields *not* work. Granted, the author proposes a number of variants and observes the visible effects, but does little with that. Both light and matter are in fact deflected by gravity but I know I cannot just see the strength of gravity before using it. Perhaps the "wall" of the shield is in fact a gravitational peak.
Still, the article does invite you to think about what you know shields to be. To that end it is VERY good to read, despite it's age.
