Interesting chart ... BUT although the dollars are corrected for inflation, wouldn't the better figure be debt as a percentage of gross economic output? Doesn't matter if your debt is 7 times the size it was if your economy is seven times the size.

Hmm, strange. The national debt seems to really skyrocket once the conservatives took power in the Reagan administration. Before that, it was pretty level. Aren't fiscal conservatives always the ones whining about the national debt and idolizing Reagan?
