Esalen Institute is a retreat center in Big Sur, California for humanistic alternative education. Established in 1962, it is devoted to multidisciplinary studies that are usually missed by traditional academia in subjects ranging from meditation to massage, Gestalt, yoga, psychology, ecology, health, spirituality, art, music, and community-building. There are more than 500 public workshops a year in addition to invitational conferences, residential work-study programs, research initiatives, and internships. Esalen's grounds are located on the Big Sur Coast where its famous natural hot springs are used year round overlooking the Pacific Ocean. There is delicious food grown on the the property's farm and gardens and guests enjoy three meals a day that include meat, dairy, vegetarian and vegan options. Visitors come from around the world for "the intellectual freedom to consider systems of thought and feeling that lie beyond the current constraints of mainstream academia."
