Forgot "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again."
I'm going to write a 100 best opening lines of all time list!
Oh shit. I can only pull ten good ones off the top of my head.
THESE ARE DECENT TOO.
Very nice list. I must confess that I have not read many of the works listed. Are there plans to do a 100 best lines from more contemporary novels?
Where now? Who now? When now? Samuel Beckett (trans. Patrick Bowles) The Unnamable 1953
Excellent, inspiring list
great line...fire of my loins ...lol
What a useless list. A lot of these first lines are nothing on their own. "I am an invisible man"? That's not even close to note-worthy.
The problem with this is that you usually have to have read the book to understand WHY it is good.
Some of these are great opening lines, but some are just famous books. And a list of famous first lines that doesn't include The Metamorphosis is just BS. Still, some good ones.
I like first lines of books ... but they aren't so good. seems to be just a list of famous books...
Yeah. I'm not really sure how great the first line is all by itself.
all of these books are pretty famous but I can't say all of them have great first lines. I love catch-22, it's a fantastic book, but in all honesty "it was love at first sight" is so bland compared to the rest of the book - especially when it isn't given in the context used.
I refuse to accept Moby Dick as number one. But this is still an exceptional collection.
infoplease... good website I love books
Love this simple idea...
