Great analysis of the class divide between middle- and lower-class African Americans. From the Panthers to the SNCC, from black nationalism to Marxism, from "gangstas" to "bourgies," Professor Gates covers a wide range of topics and sheds light on class and race issues from all angles. In line with this inclusiveness, Gates includes interviews from civil rights pioneers, leading academics in African American studies, and popular entertainers alike, putting these issues in a firm context of history and culture. My only complaint is that Gates' strong focus on the intersection of blackness and class may unconsciously minimize the struggles of black women and LGBT people of color. Regardless, this site provides an excellent introduction to those who wonder, "How have we reached this point, where we have both the largest black middle class and the largest black underclass in our history?"
