This time of year, we tend to be constantly attacked by messages of consumerism, buying things nobody really needs in order to fulfill our society's expectations of what you need to do to show that you care! Yet there are so many people in extreme poverty who go without. Those without adequate food, shelter, medicine or education. Instead of buying those on your Christmas list another sweater or gadget, why not help those who desperately need it get a leg up on your recipient's behalf?
I think I'm going to show my 9 year old sister this site, and let her pick something out under $50. That way she can feel good about helping out, while learning about all the ways those in developing countries go without what we take for granted.
