death as dillusion
death as dillusion
Mind over Matter.
Live your life fully and do 'not think of death!!!!!!!!!!
I started crying when I got to the quote by Dyer. I feel all the time that underneath the surface of reality is a sublime and horrible secret written out in an incomprehensible language.
A popular scientific observation is that all of the atoms in our bodies are in constant transition. They are shed from our bodies and replaced at a constant rate. The atoms within your brain are replaced every twelve months and most of your body is replaced about every seven years.
Therefore, how can you say you are the same person that you were a year ago? You can, of course, because your subjective consciousness is not a physical entity, it is an intangible system that is supported, but not reliant on, a physical substrate.
As with any system in the universe, our minds are sustained by a physical substrate; in our case, the protein-based biology of our brains. The components of the system may change, but the system itself remains.
Similarly, in a PC a program can be copied from a magnetically-encoded disk drive to an electronically-encoded RAM chip whilst maintaining its integrity.
If the carbon-based biology of your conciousness is constantly changing without your mind disappearing, then why couldn't your mind be safely transferred to a silicone-based substrate, such as a computer processor?
'Our brains are âoeexperience machinesâ. All we can be is what we experience and anything outside of that is a subjective impossibility. Death denotes a complete lack of experience, and so is, by definition, something that we cannot participate in'
A lobotomy destroys this. He says you can cut off half your brain, but still be who you are. A lobotomy has shown that when disconnecting the frontal lobe, many people's behaviors changed. Not that their bodies became unable to reproduce such actions as before, but the person CONSCIOUSLY decided not to permit such actions to happen. BOOM. Science in yo face sonnnnn.
stopped reading after I kept seeing quotes from the matrix....
some interesting theories
consciousness is like fire. we're all but one matchstick. i want a forest consumed in flame.
Death is an Illusion
This is my philosophy exactly, and it sums up much of the thoughts that I have meditated upon. I especially love the poem at the end of the article.
Makes you think for awhile, but ultimately garbage!
I'd like to say that this article made me feel better, but the idea of ceasing to exists scares me a lot. Sure, I haven't always existed, but after existing and feeling, knowing that one day it'll all be gone is a terrible realization. I don't care about the fact that I'll never experience it. It's the end of experience that I don't like to think about.
Nothing new to me, although that poem at the end is inspiring.
this is one of the most beautiful articles I have read in a long time, I strongly urge people to read it. But of course for no particular reason:)
