Most people by age 30 begin to close off emotionally and otherwise, and few have any significant personality changes. One of my biggest gripes! A John Hopkins study shows a single dose of psilocybin can help you open up and grow as a person, and cause long lasting changes.

I had a friend name Richie that shot himself in the chest with a .45 cal gun while high on mushrooms. I really don't think I would say this type of drugs is safe if it can cause a person to do such a thing..

A single high dose of the hallucinogen psilocybin, the active ingredient in so-called "magic mushrooms," was enough to bring about a measureable personality change lasting at least a year in nearly 60 percent of the 51 participants in a new study, according to the Johns Hopkins researchers who conducted it.

Way to deter people from trying new things.
Yes, shrooms can kill you - if you don't know exactly what you're looking for and what you're getting. There are many types of shrooms that are mere imitations and very dangerous. But if you're not a complete idiot and do your research and get them from someone you can trust, it's not something to fret over.

To bad all the participants were already spiritual/religious. It seems like an interesting find, although it does not seem to me that there are implications for depression therapy and a help for smokers who want to quit (last thing you need is more drugs). What openness measures is the level of acceptance of new experiences, but the study doesn't say (or at least here) was there any systematic increase in specific items. It could be just the case that they are just more open to are more specific category of experiences.

This was one of the "reasons" why they were banned and also used as a deterrent.
