The Tolkien and the Amber series are the only two I'd consider to be even close to the top in fantasy series. All the others are boy's sex & chopem'ta'bits fantasies. Ugh.
The problem is that modern readers often fail to read older books and series so they can't tell good books from bad.
Try Mervyn Peake's "Gormengast' .
The Earth Sea Trilogy by Leguin.
The Hideous Strength Sequence by C.S. Lewis. Both sf & fantasy.
Conan by Robert E. Howard.
