Interesting article, but it doesn't particularly answer why intelligent people are more likely to use, despite the question being in the title.

Starts with 'Opium and cannabis are the only âoenaturalâ psychoactive drugs' and lost me there - no mushrooms and there is a great deal more than that I could pick locally for starters.

I don't support this fact as i believe less intelligent people are more prone to use drugs because they fail to cope with their everyday life problems so they started consuming drugs so that they may find some diversion from their problems instead of facing them and finding ways to deal with them.

What a bunch of nonsense! A guy who has never been on drugs is as much an authority on drugs as a priest who had never had sex talking about it. Intelligent people such as myself use drugs because we want to broaden or consciousness and our minds. And yes, life is pain, but we dont try to escape from it, we try to understand it. This japanese guy has his brains charred of watching too much tentacle rape hentai

Very interesting...
As for my 2 cents about this jazz:
Highly intelligent people are more aware of the fact that life is suffering... And sometimes reading Haruki Muakami just won't help to forget this.

Can't say I disagree with all the the hypothesis' points, but what about the correlations between intelligence and income compared with drug use and income?

This doesn't prove that more intelligent people use more drugs, it just proves that people have been retarded longer than we though.

This is utter nonsense. The use of tobacco (300 years old) is not older than the use of opium (5000 years old). Morphine and heroin are both opiates, which the author doesn't seem to realize. The graphs are based on "Latent" factors, which the author never bothers to define... but given that "latent" means "potential", and "potential" factors are by definition not currently present, I think we can safely conclude that this article is nonsense.

From the page: Opium and cannabis are the only "natural" (agricultural) psychoactive drugs. Other psychoactive drugs are "chemical" (pharmacological);
fact checking here: you can take magic mushrooms, also psychoactive, after they've been dried. no modern chemicals required. among others, of course. there's plenty of peoples living traditional lifestyles that take psycoactive drugs made from plants & animals, besides those two. today is a bad day for fact-checking.

The article says earnings was not associated, but it has to be. More intelligent people may use more drugs more frequently because they have the means and resources to obtain the drugs more frequently. Intelligence is, a sad truth, related to household income. Smarter kids have access to better school districts, private schools, books and technology. Better school districts maybe in higher income areas because of the amount of taxes paid to the district. I think this study should be interpreted with caution.

From the page: People - scientists and civilians alike - often associate intelligence with positive life outcomes. The fact that more intelligent individuals are more likely to consume alcohol, tobacco, and psychoactive drugs tampers this universally positive view of intelligence and intelligent individuals. Intelligent people don't always do the right thing, only the evolutionarily novel thing.

an interesting question but a fairly silly article. i think there could be quite a few reasons why intelligent people use drugs, like being more likely to self-criticise and take more stressful jobs. also maybe the belief that they can be in control of their drug use where less intelligent people might believe the continual anti-drug messages.
