The factor (scientific advance) measured in what? The belief of omnipotent science...
Christianity still didn't cause the Dark Ages. Thaaanks.
Moronic. The Dark Ages weren't dark because there was some grand stopping in social or scientific advancement. They're dark because we lost all the records, and so it's near impossible to figure out what was happening.
And Christianity had even less to do with it, unless you're one of those idiots who believes that Christianity caused the downfall of Rome.
A load of rubbish, through and through. The "Dark Ages" (called that because for a long time we didn't know much about them, not because they were gloomy) were a time of huge scientific and social advancement. The idea of the Muslim world as light years ahead of the Christian one is bogus too, a fantasy of the same ilk as the one that makes people look to "Eastern healing" instead of Western science. We were better at some stuff than they were, and they were better at some stuff than we were. Neither groups were particularly tolerant, medically advanced or peaceful.
ejes- Maybe you should look at the scientific advances made in the Muslim world. In these times, Baghdad was the center of knowledge, tolerance, and research. Anyone was welcome in the pursuit of knowledge- regardless of religion or faith. Also during the Dark Ages, were the Crusades. You can't tell me that the Crusades didn't screw up the Muslim world, just a little.
Yes, religion screwed us. To the extent that this half-assed graph depicts, maybe not. But, scientific advance as a whole suffered.
Worth a chuckle. But Dark Ages are quite complex, and more closely associated with ecological degredation (the Romans cut down all the forests in Europe/Mediterranean, degraded their farmland) and well there there goes the food surplus and eventually the entire society along with it, reverting to subsistence agriculture and hunter/gathering (if this option is even available). These ways of living do not really allow for rapid advancement.
By the number of innovations based on scientific principles. Prayer didn't invent the the logic circuit, the transistor, the microchip, and the computer.
