Breast Cancer Answers
The paternal history, the history on the father's side of the family, is in fact very important in breast cancer. Through the years we have typically thought `gee, it was just down the mother's side of the family, and if my mother or her sisters or my maternal grandmother have breast cancer, that's what I was most focused on'. Now it can also come down the paternal side, and particularly, with the breast cancer genes coming down the paternal side.
Really important on the paternal side is, "Is there a history on the father's side of the family of ovarian cancer?" or very important, "Is there also a history in the father's side of the family of male breast cancer?" Both of these can be clues that coming down the father's side in the family is the breast cancer gene, and so knowing your paternal history, as well as your maternal history; both of these are very important.
