lol. a lot of you reviewers sound just slightly more intelligent than the morons I have been seeing going in and out of McCain/Palin rallies. Please, only put the shoe on if it fits.
Racism: Only acceptable if its about white people.
I first discovered this photo on theblackcommentator.com, and it certainly deserves to be spread everywhere. Mainly because it is true. And this is coming from someone who is white.
A large percentage of whites want to believe the myth of race neutrality. According to the myth of race neutrality, poverty is not the result of racism, even though blacks are at the bottom of nearly every statistical category on health and wealth. Most whites, including myself, admit slavery and segragation were terrible crimes of the past, yet it is difficult for us to comprehend the consequences of it, nor are we willing to point out the racist system existing today.
There are even worse perspectives on this topic: "So what?" ask conservative whites, who feel they they have no obligation to the problems in the black community. But these conservative whites, and all whites, undoubtedly benefit from the exploitation of the black community: Blacks are more likely to be put in prison, more likely to be laid off, and more likely to be turned down for a job, even if more qualified than a white person. White privilege, in the white communities' view, is not worth giving up. To those who say this is anti-white racism, here is a quote from Malcolm X:
"All of us [in the black community] have suffered here, in this country, political oppression at the hands of the the white man, and social degradation at the hands of the white man. Now in speaking like this, it doesn't mean that we're anti-white, but it does mean we're anti-exploitation, we're anti- degradation, we're anti-oppression. . . . No I'm not an American. I' m one of the 22 million black people who are victims of democracy, nothing but disguised hypocrisy. So, I'm not standing here speaking to you as an American. . . . I'm Speaking as a victim of this American system. And I see America through the eyes of the victim. . . ." (The Great Wells of Democracy. Marable. Manning)
"What about the Irish, Oriental, Italian and Jewish? They seem to have gotten up on their own."
Clearly you have no real understanding of race/ethnic relations in the United States... for answers to how they "got up on their own" why not look into how the US "whitened" the Jews, Irish, and Italians in the first part of the 20th century. Here is a hint - a whole lot of government help through HUD loans, GI Bill assistance, etc. All programs that changed the lives of a majority of people living in these ethnic/racial groups while blacks (and other ethnic/racial groups) were historically left out of these programs... Try reading this article entitled How Jews Became White by Karen Brodkin Sacks:
Or, try reading Inequality by Design:
As for Asians... well just google search Myth of the Model Minority and you will find a million reasons why you went wrong there...
Additionally, to aelfwyne down here...yes it is true that not all "whites" benefited from these leg ups, but, as a race, whites are significantly better off than other races. Go do some research on the US Census website instead of just assuming your position in life is a prime example of why your argument is right. I also come from a poor, white family...but I know better.
"You'll succeed or fail based on YOUR merits, not those of someone 30, 50 or 150 years ago."
You allude to the idea of the American Dream, but the American Dream is not tangible, nor is it achievable, especially for many from minority ethnic/racial groups. Those most likely to be successful in the US are those born into successful, well off families...period. The price of education continues to skyrocket, keeping it out of the hands of many minorities who are born into families with less socioeconomic clout, and, for all the cries of reverse racism in affirmative action, no one seemed to realize that affirmative action didn't give minorities an advantage, it only leveled the playing field.
Have any of you seriously considered what colleges look for in entrance criteria? Where you live, what classes you take in high school, what high school you attended, and whether or not your family has had alumni from said college/university are all selection criteria for acceptance at many colleges... given that minorities are often born into families that are in the lower socioeconomic statuses, what racial/ethnic group do you think has the advantage already in their favor? (Hint:check the census stats again...)
Is it the students fault that he/she was more likely to live in a poor neighborhood then his or her peers? IS it the students fault that his school is not rated as high as his peer's school (which again is related to neighborhoods/Socioeconomic status)? Is it the students fault that his school didn't offer AP courses and extra-curricular activities (again, most likely due to the neighborhood the school is in/SES)? And who do you think, exactly, benefits from having Alumni in the school previously? It certainly isn't blacks and other minorities who had family members that were banned from attending many colleges/universities around the nation not so much as 50-60 years ago...
You are actually more likely to die in the same socioeconomic class that you are born into, OR A LOWER CLASS, than you are to move up, and minorities are more likely to be born into lower socioeconomic statuses than whites (again, check the census website)...racial discrimination still exists people, its just much more covert...
Racism at its finest.
Did I not review this before? Even if I did, I will say it again.
First the general thumbs down reviews. Several issues have been raised, such as the fact that it was not this simple, it was many years ago, it leaves out other ethnicities who have 'gotten up' or 'left behind'.
First, of course this is simple. This is a caricature, that is trying to capture the essence of what has happened, and still happens because of that which happened. In that, it is a very accurate rendition of the race relationships amongst african-americans and european-americans. African americans have been brought to the new world as slaves and so their roots and all other social, cultral, economic relations have been severed, and because of this the emancipation could not, and did not work, and continues not working because of this simple material deprivation.
The very fact that this happened many years ago still does not change the fact that acquiring wealth and status as a minority, made to live as minority without any means to acquire wealth and many social, racial obstructions to acquire them makes the 'it was long ago' argument meaningless.
The fact that 'some' other minorities 'made it' does not apply, irish, italian, jewish, asian peoples did have continuing relationships with their mainland, have had fewer racial aggression due to their visible 'whiteness' and neither had been labeled as a cause of a civil war among the ruling ethnicity, which rendered a part of the country, still to this day, economically handicapped and therefore made the aggression even more pronounced.
These coupled with the previous conditions I mentioned, cause a certain african-american idiosyncrasy, of course within a relativistic scale, towards their disadvantage and detriment. With or without these, I should also add that, the other ethnicities have not made it the way one would expect a certain ethnicity to make it. Jewish people, who might be considered as the most successfully integrated, still face everyday discrimination, have been traditionally left outside of the military bureaucracy and other fields that are traditionally dominated by the white americans.
Still, I think I must address why this comic offends, and should offend, those who believe in what most americans believe in: individualism. Individualism assumes the role of the individual against all odds, be it social, economical, cultural, wherein the individual maintains a certain work ethic and discipline to achieve his-her goals. And not surprisingly, those ethnicities who have fewer of those type of people point to a certain genetic disposition (the pseudo scientific, sociobiology sauced version of the individualism of the reductionist position capitalist ideologies seem to thrive in) are said to be begging for welfare, being lazy, and other racist stuff.
So those of you who think this comic is funny, and has a point, consider this when you're voting for Obama, the poster child who is out there to prove *even* the black people might make it if they tried hard enough, and indirectly commenting that they aren't, like they never have. But of course you think liberal left and obama is out there to help the racial relations.
You left out that it's actually the white guy's great great grandson who apologized.
do not point out the jesters flaws, but laugh and grasp the thread of causality which binds the associated ideas.
It couldn't be better put.
Everyone else has been able to recover from their ages of abuse except blacks. Looking at the way things are, many of them expect people to automatically respect them because of what happened to predecessors they never met and don't try to make a better life for themselves.
