Great idea, pretty good. But still there are some inaccuracies or words with uncertain etymology so take this with a small grain of salt.

Great idea, but be forewarned: inaccuracies abound! For example, according to wikipedia.org on the Yucatan Peninsula, which is labeled "I don't understand you" in the Atlas: "the actual source of the name "Yucatan" is the Nahuatl (Aztec) word Yokatlan, 'place of richness.'"

"The Atlas of True Names reveals the etymological roots, or original meanings, of the familiar terms on today's maps of the World, Europe, the British Isles and the United States. For instance, where you would normally expect to see the Sahara indicated, the Atlas gives you "The Tawny One", derived from Arab. es-sahra "the fawn coloured, desert".

It's funny how many cities (Salt Lake City, Portland) don't change. Can't help but wonder now how place names sound to the speakers of other languages. And yeah, I think "China" really does mean middle kingdom.
