A couple of years ago I watched an interesting documentary about Monsanto on German television, and here comes a short summary:
Monsanto's techniques for modifying food genes are most of the time "shotgun-style". They don't test the outcome thoroughly because they only care about unique DNA sequences which they can patent in order to license the crap out of this stuff and proceed as described by this article by harassing farmers and their competition.
But the most alarming part is: many farmers all around the world noticed that their cattle got seriously sick due to Monsanto's modified corn. So they stopped feeding their cattle with that modified stuff and some of these farmers had the guts to notify Monsanto, resulting in extreme harassment. They sued the crap out of these farmers to make them quite. Bad publicity must not happen.
Monsanto doesn't give a crap about curing world hunger. That was just a politically influenced publicity stunt to justify their agenda. It's rather naive of my fellow commenters to believe that a company does something for the good of humanity. It is always about money, that's trivial common sense.
And on a side note: we're over-producing and throwing away food anyway.
The documentary told about people who witnessed that Bush laughed his ass off after he gave a "Monsanto is good and cures hunger so we need more genetically engineered food" speech while he met representatives of that company. Monsanto and Bush know that these are outright lies in order to degrade countries like Germany which make it pretty difficult for genetically engineered food to enter the market without explicit designation. Food designated as genetically engineered is almost impossible to sell in Germany, because people there still believe that mother nature is the best genetic engineer around. You can't blame them for believing this.
Monsanto is pure evil. Patenting life is outrageous. Just stop it.
