Lovely poem, and very true.
Poem Written well
One of the best poems I ever read.
Wow talk about depressing
Well..... That's depressing.
The rhyme isn't "bad" as much as it is archaic...this poem is a century old.
its, not it's. the-saddest-borg sums up the rest.
Awsome, I find the poem tells it like it is. In grief and sadness you are alone
Be a cool writer and people shall give you a crown. Be a fucking whining poet and people will thumb you down.
Right, okay, no. This is terrible. Do you see that "full measure of all your pleasure" line there? It would be enough to ruin something magnificent like The Waste Land, nevermind this little piece of mawkish sentiment.
Internal rhymes tend to be a bad idea, unless you're consciously going for some more complex sort of assonance or reverberation, like Poe did in The Raven. Basically, they're to be avoided unless you're absolutely sure of what you're doing. But "measure" and "pleasure" on top of that? In the very same, very short line? Okay, maybe it works with "bound" and "sound" up there, these are one-syllable words, the line doesn't stretch needlessly, it's melodic rather than awkward. But "measure" and "pleasure", fuck no. Almost all of the internal-rhyme lines in this poem are bad, bad, horrible.
Basically what I'm saying is, Ella Wheeler Wilcox ain't got no flow.
